What is manual lymphatic drainage?

Manual lymphatic drainage is a specialised massage technique that is used to promote lymphatic movement, good circulation and the clearing of cell debris. It helps reduce swelling and is often specifically used to shorten recovery time in post-operative patients. Many people who struggle with water retention or lymphedema use this technique to manage their swelling. It is also used to help maintain homeostasis (the condition of optimal functioning) in the body.

What is lymphatic drainage used to treat?

It is most effective with a treatment course of multiple sessions and is very rarely used as a once off session.  The treatment is designed to kick-start your system and needs time to be sustained. The best results take commitment to achieve. It can help reduce swelling, bruising and fibrosis in the post-operative period. It is also used to manage chronic conditions such as lymphedema, water retention, hormone imbalances and auto-immune diseases. It is often used to maintain good circulation in compromised lymphatic systems.

What should you expect in your appointment?

After booking an appointment and filling out the online registration form, you will get a free consultation added to your first appointment. The lymphatic drainage technique is very gentle and uses pumping and stroking motions to promote the flow of fluid in the correct directions. As it suits your condition, your therapist might work along these areas of lymphatic clusters: neck, stomach, armpits, groin and knees. It is normal to feel very calm, relaxed and often people fall asleep. The body usually goes into a parasympathetic state (the rest and digest state), which promotes healing, rest and balance in the body.
